Summit One Gallery, in Highlands, NC, wanted to do something to help the Highlands Cashiers Land Trust (HCLT) celebrate their 100th birthday. Owner, Mary Adair Leslie, came up with the idea of having the artists she represents do interpretrations of some of the photographs that were submitted for the HCLT's coffee table book, "First Creations", produced to celebrate their 100th birthday. I have 21 photographs in the book, none of which are the ones here. I went to Summit One Gallery and photographed the paintings the artists had done from my photographs. I have included those photographs in this Album.

A New Light59 viewsThis is the best one so far!
Dragonflies are new for me. This was my 3rd or 4th time, ever. Butterflies I know, but dragonflies are another matter. They are more skittish than butterflies and they seem to see better, Butterflies get preoccupied with nectaring, mating, puddling, and charging their solar batteries. Yes, they are partially solar powered. Puddling is when males drink salts from the wet sand or manure to become more fertile.
I think about how to best capture these guys, if they let me.If you shoot them square-on from the top, everything can be in focus, but they don't always let you get over top of them and the same shot becomes boring after a while. You don't get a good shot of their face that way. Anyhow, I was trying to think of different angles when I noticed the setting sun. I thought why not see if I can make their wings glow in the twilight, and I did. This guy let me take 20 pictures from just a few inches away. He was on crepe myrtle, so the background is colorful. I love soft, out-of-focus, colorful backgrounds. This is the full-res file. Zoom in and look at the detail. I love taking a picture like this that shows you more than you can see with the naked eye.
This is sheds a new light on things, so I'm calling it A New Light.
